How we created influence for a throwback music brand

pacejunk is a New York City based music company that creates live music experiences with curated content in an exhibition format. They turned to us to craft their brand image and develop their first marketing campaign. 

Research and Insights

We turned to vinyl for our inspiration and scoured the racks of every record store in Brooklyn’s most happening hipster hangouts. We spent hours listening to Spacejunk curated playlists. And we devoured the “David Bowie is” exhibit in The Brooklyn Museum.  The result is a pitch perfect brand identity.

Creative Solution

Our research resulted in a key insight that became the foundation for everything we did. Inspiration. The fans that follow Spacejunk listen to music that inspires them. And the artists that create that music are following their own sources of inspiration. Those sources of inspiration became our sources of inspiration. The result? We developed our “What Influences You?” campaign by doing a deep dive into the influences behind our favorite music.

BRAND IDENTITY. Our first order of business was to develop the brand identity for Spacejunk. So much of the music enjoyed by Spacejunk’s audience was born in the atomic age. The brand name itself is a lighthearted nod to the space race of the 50s and 60s and the very first piece of Spacejunk ever invented — Sputnik. Sputnik takes us back to the beginning of the Cold War and the Space Race, when everything was “atomic” and “space age”. By making the Sputnik satellite into a record, it ties all of that nostalgia into our promise of music.

BRAND GUIDE. We fashioned the Brand Guide into a Brand Album, finding inspiration in some of the best albums in our collection of vinyl.

ONLINE PROMOTION CAMPAIGN. We also created a series of graphics for their social media and Spotify posts promoting their Friday Listening collaborative playlists. Each graphic was an original design we created, inspired by vintage record labels.

ADVERTISING.  We created the advertising campaign titled “What Influences You?” that focuses on music legends and the people and events that made them into legends.

WEBSITE. The website we designed promotes their brand, their venues, and their playlists. It includes interactive content in support of the “What Influences You?” campaign that includes background on all of the major influences of each of the featured artists.

Outcomes

With our help, Spacejunk built a growing base of followers on Spotify. Their online music exhibits brought insight and entertainment to their fans and demonstrated the cultural impact of influence as seen through the lens of the music industry. Hailed as “enticing” and “a cultural lodestone” by critics, Spacejunk’s greatest accomplishment was the immeasurable increase in smiles and foot tapping everywhere.
