Communities of amputees are helping to make life easier for each other

B

latchford is a company that has been helping amputees since the late 19th century. For over a century, they’ve manufactured innovative prosthetics and have been at the forefront of pioneering change in the industry.

Their microprocessor knees, their lightweight and durable designs, and their full limbic system, Linx, are all innovations that they’ve brought to engineering prosthetics to closer mimic a biological limb. However, they’re technological achievements aren’t the biggest part of their business.

Blatchford believes in a people first approach and feels the path forward can only be achieved together. That’s why, with Positive Brand’s help, they have established their BAM! Blatchford Ambassadors of Mobility program. BAM! has the upfront incentive of having amputees try on new advancements in prosthetics while acting as a tester before the product becomes more widely available. But there is more to the program than product testing. As the name implies, the Ambassador program is the gateway for amputees to spread the news about Blatchford’s approach to helping their community.

When we started developing BAM! with Blatchford’s internal marketing team, we interviewed Blatchford’s ambassadors as part of our discovery phase. One thing stood out: practically every ambassador in the program talks about the family dynamic they feel collaborating with Blatchford and how their relationship with the prosthetists, clinic, and the manufacturer is their favorite part of their experience. It’s this experience that cascades outward to spread throughout the amputee community as the BAM! ambassadors go out and help those who are going through similar life experiences.

BAM! Ambassadors reach out to people who feel they may have lost hope, or that they don’t have anyone around who understands what they’re experiencing. The individuals in the Ambassador program are able to not just comfort those affected by limb loss but give them advice and guide them through their journey ahead. This effort doesn’t just help new amputees, it helps the ambassadors as well who find a new sense of purpose and belonging when they see the look of hope in people who had felt less. And that’s what we all want, really. Hope.
