Sustainability in fashion through Madewell Jeans

9

BILLION items of clothing are estimated to be sitting in closets unworn and ready for a new home.

Madewell doesn’t just make jeans. They also don’t just make clothing. They make a difference in the world and strive to do well. They’re a company dedicated to making positive change and it’s a large part of what drives them. They have tremendous goals, not just for their company, but also to help wherever they can to better society and improve the planet. Part of this practice includes simple things like inclusivity in hiring. But their commitment extends beyond  inclusivity in the workplace. It’s sourcing 15% of the businesses they work with to be black owned businesses. They give back to the environment through partnerships with groups that work towards reforestation efforts. Not just partnering with these groups but pioneering change through their partnerships.

These are just a couple of the ways that Madewell makes a difference in their business practices. They take their social responsibility very seriously and have every aspect of their business dedicated to sustainability. Their vendors are responsibly sourced to maintain ethically made and gathered materials. Their denim is a big part of their production and so they are hyper focused on each material in their jeans being from a specific source that they can feel proud of using.

They are not content with their current way of doing things. They have aggressive goals of increasing their contributions. One goal is to collect one million pairs of jeans by 2023 through their Madewell Forever program. That’s twice as many jeans that they have saved from the trash in the last six years. They also have a goal of 100% sustainably sourced packing by 2025, free of non-recycled plastics. On top of this, their big goal is to be completely carbon neutral by 2030.

These goals are not pie-in-the-sky for Madewell. They have taken strides in the past and continue to strive for better practices on every front. It’s little things that have a huge impact, like offering paperless receipts, offering customers Boxed Water instead of plastic bottled water, and using LED lighting that can save up to 80% on electricity versus incandescent lighting. It’s partnering with companies like FlexPrint and Trees for the Future to offset their paper footprint from their HQ and planting over 240 trees so far. Or partnering with Cotton’s Blue Jeans Go Green™ program, Good360 and FabScrap to donate their clothing samples instead of letting them go into landfills.

It’s all of these things that make Madewell not just any company, but a purpose driven company. A committed goal to be a positive change in the world and to do business differently. To do business responsibly. Not to do business with only profit in mind, but to do business with a purpose.
