How behavioral science and marketing are helping Stem4 combat mental illness

M

ental health isn’t the easiest subject for people. There’s a lot of barriers on the road to recovery, and so much of it starts at the beginning. Issues can pop-up early on in our lives and go left untreated for so long. Stem4 was founded with this exact issue in mind. The non-profit saw that mental health has become a growing issue, especially for teenagers. Their objective is to promote positive mental health in teenagers and those who support them like friends, family, and their community through mental health education, resilience strategies and early detection/intervention.

To help them in this mission, Stem4 has enlisted the support of actor, Tom Holland and his brothers. The Holland clan use Instagram as their platform for raising awareness and support for worthy charities @thebrotherstrust.  Their express mission is to support charities who struggle to be heard.

Stem4 is combating one of the hardest areas for many as addressing mental health is never easy. To reach people that need help, they are using social media influencers like Tom Holland and The Brothers Trust combined with educational programs and an app patterned after a variety of behavioral science interventions.

There are a variety of issues any one individual may have, so Stem4’s solution offers a number of ways to identify and obtain the help necessary to promote better mental health.

They primarily address the issue using educational programs through schools and conferences, pioneering mental health apps, and a clinically informed website. Their support of secondary education comes from their Head Ed material which aims to engage 11+ and 14+ students about mental health. It brings knowledge of how to spot early signs of mental ill-health using topics that matter to young people to foster better engagement.

The conferences offered by Stem4 also cover different audiences addressing various mental health challenges. The conferences for students can help them manage stress and identify early warning signs along with knowing when to ask for help. For parents, the conferences can educate them on how to spot the early sings of mental unrest and provide tips on communicating effectively.

Education professionals, school nurses, and general practitioners also have specific conferences from Stem4 to address the various audiences. For those in education, the conferences offer topics and forums to discuss general concerns as well as developing policies and practices for their schools. School nurses and general practitioners have conferences that cover topics like early identification, support for students, and evidence-based intervention methods.

One of the avenues that Stem4 has developed to reach their audiences are their various apps for specific needs. Calm Harm is an app aimed at those who have issues with self-harm and is designed to introduce various exercises and activities to help break the cycle.

Clear Fear is the app designed to help those suffering from anxiety. Anxiety disorders are the most common form of emotional disorder and respond very well to a form of treatment called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT.

Move Mood is focused on depression and low mood for individuals. The app aims to use evidence based Behavioral Activation Therapy to help improve mood. This is done through various activities to engage motivation and take control to feel more positive.

Combined Minds works to strengthen teenagers who have been diagnosed with mental health issues by engaging their friends and families to help with recovery. By using a ‘Strengths Based’ Approach the communities using the app can focus on the positive attributes of the person and build on resourcefulness and resilience.

An individual may not need every app that Stem4 has developed, but they all work to achieve their goal of helping address mental health concerns. There’s always work to be done in helping those suffering from mental illness, and it’s fantastic that Stem4 recognizes that so much of the problem should be addressed early on. By recognizing early signs in young groups of teenagers, Stem4 is tackling the issue at its roots and engaging groups with educational platforms with tested methods.
